A departmental inquiry was ordered against 14 policemen attached to the Police Line in Kanpur for their suspected role in implicating a Dalit man in a false case.
Furthermore, the role of Barra SHO and ACP Govind Nagar in the case is also being investigated.
Many police personnel were found guilty in an investigation being carried out by ADCP South Manish Sonkar, who is probing the case of possession of a Dalit woman’s house in Barra.
In the Barra area of Kanpur, a Dalit family was allegedly harassed by a man, Umrao, along with police officials. The accused allegedly assaulted the whole family of the victim, Mahadev, and then made them homeless following a property dispute.
The accused also captured their home. During the scuffle, Mahadev’s daughter suffered a head injury.
Based on Mahadev’s complaint, a case under the SC/ST Act and robbery charges was registered against Umrao.
However, ACP Govind Nagar removed the sections of robbery from the FIR even as video evidence of the incident suggested otherwise.
On the contrary, police then registered a case of theft against Mahadev.
When the matter was brought to the notice of senior police officials, an inquiry was ordered, which was led by ADCP South Manish Sonkar.
Sonkar suspected the involvement of police officials in the matter.
Taking action on the basis of the investigation, DCP South Raveena Tyagi then attached 14 police personnel of a police post and ordered a departmental inquiry.
