Kerala: 75-year-old Dalit woman battles for life after gang-rape in Ernakulam

Kochi: A 75-year-old dalit woman with dementia and mental health issues was brutally raped in a manic attack reported at
a village in Ernakulam dis

trict of Kerala.

The assailants targetted the woman at Kolenchery on Sunday morning, police who were unwilling to reveal much in the
case being probed by a team led by Muvattupuzha Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), said.
Sources say a woman in the neighborhood offered the septuagenarian tea and tobacco and lured her to the woman’s house
located in the neighborhood.
The victim, who was attacked with lethal weapons, including in her private parts was initially admitted to a private hospital

from where she was referred to the Medical College Hospital.
She underwent an emergency surgery at the medical college hospital and was shifted to the ICU. The doctors say her condition continues to remain serious and they are monitoring the situation as nothing could be said as of now.
The Puthencruz police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) besides the SC and ST
(Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on a complaint lodged by the woman’s daughter.
Three persons including a woman were being interrogated by the police in connection with the brutal attack.
Meanwhile, the State Women’s Commission has registered a suo motu case. The commission chairperson M.C.Josephaine,
after visiting the hospital, has directed the police to arrest the assailants at the earliest.
The state government would bear the treatment cost of the septuagenarian, she said.
