MADURAI: A man from Usilampatti was booked for assaulting a dalit college student in a saloon recently.
The student — R Bharathidasan, 21, from A Ramanathapuram near Usilampatti, is pursuing his third year in biotechnology. He
visited a saloon for a haircut two weeks ago. While he was waiting for his turn, N Raman from Ambadaiyanpatti, who belongs to
Piramalai Kallar community, struck a conversation with the student.
On knowing Bharathidasan’s native village, Raman asked the student which caste he belonged to. Bharathidasan said that he
did not know his caste name.
Irked over the reply, the accused verbally abused and physically assaulted Bharathidasan using a caste name he may have
belonged to.
Following this, Bharathidasan lodged a complaint with Usilampatti Town police station on Friday.
A case was registered under various sections of the IPC and SC/ST prevention of atrocities act.
An inquiry is under way by the deputy superintendent of police Rajan.
