Police on Saturday arrested 34-year-old Pravat Nayak of Bedari village under the Patkura police station for his allegedly raping a 28-year-old destitute Dalit woman of Solapata village on Thursday night.
The woman is staying with her uncle. Nayak slyly entered into her room and raped her. She shouted for help. Her uncle overpowered Nayak and detained him by locking the door. Later, police arrested the accused and sent him and the woman for medical test.
Nayak was then produced before the SDJM Court, which remanded him to jail custody after rejecting his bail plea.
In another case in Kendrapada district, a widow was allegedly raped by a fellow villager under the Mahakalapada police limits.
While the widow was sleeping on Wednesday night, one Arun Rout stealthily entered into her house and committed the crime. The victim shouted for help. Rout threatened to kill her if she would disclose the matter to others.
The accused fled from the spot when the woman’s daughter and sister came for her rescue. The accused too looted a gold chain from the victim.
The woman lodged an FIR at the police station. Police have started an inquiry. No arrest has been made so far.
