03/10/2022 Sri Lanka (International Christian Concern)
Last Sunday, a mob of around 600 people broke into the Mercy Gate Chapel in Sri Lanka and demanded all religious activities cease and the church be closed. The mob threatened the pastor with death if the worship did not stop. One of the believers was assaulted and ultimately hospitalized due to his injuries. The Officer in Charge of the local police station, as well as around 20 other officers that were present, told the mob that they had no legal basis to close down the church. With no legal order, the officer advised the mob to leave.
The mob included 60 Buddhist monks who refused to leave before they could inspect the church. The pastor had refused to let them inspect the church earlier, but after assurance from the Officer in Charge that no harm would come to him or the congregation, the pastor allowed it. Upon finishing their inspection, the monks questioned the pastor about the religious activities going on in the church. After the monks had their answers, they returned to the mob outside and declared that the church was illegitimate. The mob dispersed shortly after.
Later that night, the pastor went to the police station to file a complaint against the mob and the Buddhist monks leading them. He was called to the station on Tuesday for an inquiry and the police are looking into the matter. There have been many examples of anti-Christian mobs turning violent, but luckily the Officer in Charge of the police station played a role in keeping the altercation peaceful. We pray the police will continue this attitude of diligence in their investigation.

These are monks??!!! So laughable! I thought they are taught peace and tranquility!! Apparently not! Evil and violent people who have no legal rights to inspect another person’s private property has been allowed to inspect by the police officer??!!! Are laws not upheld by the Sri Lankan police? Are there no laws against violence and mobs?
Inciting violence like that is illegal!!
These mobs should be held accountable. No wonder the world laughs at countries like Sri Lanka and the government!
If we have two states in one country, there will be respect from each other’s language, race, religion, culture, ethnicity, traditional living areas. In Britain we have four states in one country in spite of one major language. All religions are respected.
Where is religious freedom mentioned in the constitution? Can the Christian countries like Uk ,Germany, France prevent any one preaching or practicing Buddhism? This shows the caliber of Buddhist priests. Did Lord Buddha preach that other religions cannot be tolerated ?He recognized other religions this is completely against Lord Buddha’s precepts. Nihal de alwis
Foolish monks have to be arrested and to be punished confirmly!
Very suspicious report. Why the location of the church or the name of the police station is not mentioned? Nothing about such an incident was reported either in main stream or social media. Looks like a fabricated story.
These are not main line CHURCHES, but small prayer houses which thrive on convertion. They do not belong to any CHRISTIAN denomination and not recognized by the any BISHOP in SRI LANKA. No one has so attacked any mainline Churches as yet other than the xouped up EASTER BOMBINGS which were of a different perspective. Iam an a SRI LANKAN ANGLICAN.
Incident is truth. But thus image is not any connect to that. So dont public images like these. Because it was a great insult to all in that image…
Because thays why I am the pastor that facing to above insident…
You have not given detailed of the location of incident and the date ,In the absence of su h information I cannot accept the report even though I am a practicing Christian
EVERY CITIZEN IN THE NATION OF SRI LANKA HAS THEIR OWN FAITH.
I HAVE NOT HEARD OF PEOPLE WHO ATTEND CHURCH VISIT A BUDDHIST OR HINDU TEMPLE OR A MOSQUE TO HARRASS THESE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE IN WORSHIP.
WHY ARE BUDDHIST MONKS PORTRAYING ANIMOSITY, HATRED AND ANGER TOWARD OTHER PRIESTS ETC. IS THAT WHAT THEIR RELIGION TEACHES THEM??
I WATCHED ANOTHER VIDEO OF A CATHOLIC PRIEST FROM BATICALOA HUMILIATED BY A MONK IN A VERY ANGRY THREATENING MANNER AND THE POLICE WAS CALLED?
IS IT A CRIME BEING A CATHOLIC PRIEST.
SRI LANKA IS A BUDDHIST COUNTRY, BUT PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY WANT TO BELIEVE IN…
IT IS A CONCERN WHEN MONKS BEHAVE LIKE TERRORISTS.
Is sri lanka a secular country? It’s always the three minority faiths that come under attack from the majority faith,is this a vote catching gimmick of politicians belonging to the majority faith?it’s very disheartening to those belonging to the minority faiths even to the extent of living in fear.Did the politicians create this monster?
WHAT A DISTESPECTFUL DISGRACE TO HARRASS AND PERSECUTE PEOPLE WHO ARE PRAYING.
IS THAT THE TEACHING OF BUDDHISM? TO RAID, VERBALLY ABUSE AND PHYSICALLY THREATEN PEOPLE WHILE OTHER’S ARE WORSHIPPING?.
So pleased that the local police managed to peacefully break up the mob but it was so sad to see Buddhist priests involved in this violation of a consecrated church.
Just what the country needs at this time and age. It is nothing but Gods mercy we live and these morons got to behave this way. Will it ever bring peace and joy to them ?
Have a close look at the thriving state of Singapore. Since the time PM Lee Kwng Yu that State existed and continues grow to economically.
All religions, cultures, langauages, race and ethnicity co existing harmoniously for the common good of the State.
Why is it so different in Sri Lanka.
Budhism – ‘ a way of living a good life ‘ – a Philosophy not a Religion, was brought to Sri Lanka from India.
Christianity – a Religion – a way of living a good life – was brought to Sri Lanka from the Middle East and Europe.
All other faiths also preaching and practicing a good life, that are domiciled in Sri Lanka, came from abroad,
therefore why must Budhism have the monopoly ?, especially in this day and age of Multiculturism !.
LIVE AND LET LIVE PEACEABLY WITHIN THE LAWS OF THIS COUNTRY, SHOULD BE THE WATCHWORD…!!!
