In Nashik district of Maharashtra, a case of discrimination against girl students due to periods has come to the fore. A tribal girl student of a government residential school in Nashik has alleged that a male teacher stopped her and other girls from participating in a plantation drive. The student says that the teacher did this because of his perverted mindset. According to the girl’s allegation, the teacher of the residential school told the tribal girl students that if you do plantation during periods, the plants will not grow but will burn.
Tribal Development Department started investigation
In her complaint application, the Class 12 student of the Faculty of Science claimed that the teacher had told her and other girl students that if the girls with periods planted saplings, the trees would not grow but burn. The victim is a student of a higher secondary residential school for girls in Devgaon in Trimbakeshwar taluka. The Tribal Development Department ordered an inquiry into the matter.
Additional District Collector met the student
A senior Tribal Development Department (TDD) official confirmed the receipt of the complaint. Additional commissioner Sandeep Golet said that the statements of all, including girl students, teachers, superintendent and principal of the girl child category, would be taken and investigated. On Wednesday, Nashik District Additional Collector and TDD Project Officer Varsha Meena met the girl student at the school and inquired about her problems.
There are 500 girl students in the school
The complaint states that the teacher had asked menstruating girls to avoid planting trees during a tree plantation drive organized in the school premises last week. There are 500 girl students in the school. The teacher asked the students not to go near the trees as the saplings planted last year did not grow due to menstruation. After this, the student contacted Bhagwan Madhe, the Nashik district secretary of Shramjeevi Sangathan. Madhe said the girl could not oppose the male teacher as he was her class teacher and had threatened her that 80 per cent of the evaluation marks were in the hands of the school authorities.
