Upper caste Villagers Assaulted Dalit man for beating drum

The police have filed complaints against the family under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and prevention of SC/ST atrocities act.

Nelamangala: The incidents of Dalit atrocities continued to get reported from different parts of Karnataka as one more incident of Dalit being beaten up by people of upper caste has come to light.

In the incident that got reported from Nelamangala taluk of Bengaluru Rural, a Dalit man has been allegedly thrashed by people of upper caste merely for beating up drum.

Nelamangala police station has filed a complaint.

According to a report, Narayanaswamy, a resident of Modalakote village of the taluk has filed a complaint against 15 people and a complaint has so far been registered against five persons for beating him up.

In a report, Narayanaswamy said that on the noon of December 12, he was traveling in his auto rickshaw with his friend in the village near the High School of the village.

He was carrying a small drum in his auto. Out of the excitement, he beat up the drum only for some time. But some people of the Upper Caste who did not like it, began thrashing him.

Adding further in the complaint, he said that as he was beating up the drum near the house of Former president of Gram Panchayat, Govindraju, the family was angry with Narayanaswamy for beating drum near their house.

“All the members of the family  including, Govindraju, his wife and their other relatives rushed out their house and began hurling abuse. They used all objectionable words while abusing me and thrashing me”, he said.

He said that a woman by name Shashikala was beating him with brooms, chappals and sticks. They injured Narayanaswamy by hitting on the head and chest.

Narayanaswamy said that as he was unable to bear the pain, he lost his consciousness. Amid this, the information reached his father and brother, who rushed to the spot to rescue him.

Continuing their verbal assault, Govindraju used derogatory words against the parents of Narayanaswamy, the complaint said.

The Police later called him to the station, but since he was injured, he was first admitted to the hospital.

The police have filed complaints against Govindraju, Gangamani, Shivakumar, Shashikala and Ranganna under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and prevention of SC/ST atrocities act.
